Shall post the pix i took in school todae... WAIT arhx i go connect my pretty fone to the lappie! :D .......................................................................... it has been many hours since the last dot was formed, bcuz my parents came back and scolded mee... NANYANG GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL
ODYSSEY OF THE MIND (OM) COMPETITION 2007 FOR SEC 2

1. BACKGROUND OF OM
The competition is an international competition that has much prestige in the USA and in many parts of the world. The competition provides creative problem-solving opportunities, fosters original and divergent thinking and promotes the spirit of creativity and teamwork among students. Prof. Samuel Micklus from Glassboro State College of New Jersey, USA, initiated the OM tournament in 1976 and World Finals has been held annually since 1978 in USA. In each country, teams which emerged champions qualify for the World Finals held in USA. The first OM competition in Singapore was conducted in 1998. NYGH OM teams have participated in every World Finals from 2000 to date with the exception of 2004.

The competition consists of 2 sections, - Long-term Problem and Spontaneous Problem. The long-term problems are released about six months before the World Finals and the subject areas covered a wide range of topics. Some problems are more technical in nature while others are artistic or more performance-based. The spontaneous problem is announced at the competition and team members must solve or respond to the problem in a short period of time.

2. OBJECTIVES
To provide creative problem-solving opportunities.
To foster original and divergent thinking.
To improve oral and written communication skills.
To encourage team work and promote appreciation and understanding of others.
To develop a sense of self-respect and respect for others through brainstorming and role playing.

3. OM COMPETITION
Teams are awarded scores in three different areas:
a) Long-term problem (200 points)
Teams are required to prepare their solutions some months before competition. Each problem includes one or more objectives, a set of limitations, specific scoring categories and list of penalty violations.

b) Style component of long-term solution (50 points)
This portion gives teams an opportunity to showcase their creative skills through the elaboration of their problem solution.

c) Spontaneous Problem (100 points)
Pupils need to learn how to “think on their feet”. The nature of the problems varies, with each having its own set of specific rules. The three most common types are:.
i. Verbal: it may incorporate improvisation or dramatisation
ii. Hands-on: requires teams to physically create a tangible solution
iii. Verbal/hands-on: requires teams to create a tangible solution and include some type of verbal component, example, creating a story about the solution.

4. PROCESS
· Pupils are to work in groups of seven to brainstorm for ideas on the chosen long-term problem.
· Each group is to submit the project proposal form at the beginning of Term 1.

· Pupils must meet their assigned coach weekly from Jan to May during PW period.
· Pupils must meet weekly within and outside of PW period to work on the Long-term problems.
· Each group is to submit a report after the competition (OM School & OM Singapore in June and World Finals in July)
· Each group will have to do a 8-minute oral presentation with 5 minutes of Question-Answer in April.
· Briefings to support OM needs of students will be conducted on Problem Solving Tools, Working in Teams, Basic Performance Skills, Props – eg. painting on styroform and other materials and Costumes eg tips and simple skills, colour-matching.

5. REQUIREMENTS
· PROJECT PROPOSAL
Each group is to complete one proposal form. The Project Proposal Form is
available in IVLE under Project Work. Be as detailed as possible, stating clearly the
various stages, the respective internal team deadlines and the clear division of duties.

· PROJECT FILE
Each group must submit a Project File which will contain project proposal,
research materials, sample of spontaneous problems, log book, draft, report and
other relevant documents.

· REPORT GUIDELINES
Each group must submit a report of approximately 1500 words, typed using a
word processor, with double spacing, on A4-sized paper, with font size “12”.
The report should follow the following format:
Title (in capitals, followed by yours and your coach’s name)
Abstract (a concise summary of your solution)
Table of Contents
Problem Statement
Introduction
Research
Solution
Reflections
Conclusion
Recommendations
Bibliography/Appendices/ Acknowledgments

6. ASSESSMENT
Teams will be assessed on process, collaboration, presentation and report. A grade for OM will be reflected in the end-of-year result slip. The style section and spontaneous problem will not be assessed internally.

Script writing in OM will be assessed by LA teachers and will account for 7.5% of the 30% SIA mark. Prop design and construction will constitute one CA task for Art & Design and AEP in Sec 2.

7. COMPETITION DATES
OM Singapore Competition: 13 & 14 April 2007
OM World Finals: May 23 to May 26 2007 at Michigan State University, USA
Those aged below 15 years on 1 May 2007 will compete in Division 2, those 15 years and above, in Division 3

8. OM WORLD
If the team qualifies for the World Finals, its members must obtain full financial support and consent of their parents for the trip. The students concerned must not have any outstanding pieces of homework, must have performed within expectation academically and must have clearance from their respective co-curricular activities teachers.
