NUS Challenge Shield 2007

The NUS Challenge Shield 2007 was the other key tournament to conclude in the month of February. Each year, the top schools and junior colleges that are invited to participate battle it out in the vastly different style of policy debating.

The motions for the Secondary Schools were as follows:

Preliminary Round 1: Education
THW allow students to rate their teachers.
THW make education voluntary
THW teach abstinence only in secondary school fun interactions education.

Preliminary Round 2: War
THW guarantee jobs for war veterans.
THW pay reparations to families of victims killed by US soldiers in Iraq
THBT the USA should apologise for its use of chemical weapons in the Vietnam War.

Preliminary Round 3: Geopolitics
THW ban the weaponisation of space
THBT the USA should remove its military guarantee over Taiwan's security
THBT Japan's military should remain purely a defensive force.

Semi-finals: Bio-ethics
THW give terminally-ill patients access to experimental drugs.
THW remove patents on life-saving drugs.
THW ban women over the age of 45 from using assisted human reproduction.

Emerging as Semi-finalists were the teams from Nanyang Girls’ High School, Methodist Girls’ School, Raffles Institution and Anglo-Chinese School (Independent). After a very close and competitive run on issues of AIDS drugs and experimenting on terminally-ill patients, the finalists emerged to be MGS and RI.

In the Finals for Secondary Schools, MGS and RI faced off on the motion THW elect judges and while RI put forth a solid and consistent case, MGS swept the Championship in a unanimous victory! Rebecca Goh from MGS was the Best Speaker of the Finals.
